The Digital Government Virtual Summit in 2021 had a wide range of speakers from government departments, local authorities and the health and social care sector.

This session is delivered by Daljit Rehal, Chief Digital and Information Officer at Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs (HMRC) as he considers:

  • What has HMRC learned from its vital IT deliveries over the last 12 months?
  • What areas of technology have been brought into focus?
  • How is HMRC innovating and building on what it has learned?

To give some perspective, in 2019-20 HMRC brought in roughly £628 billion in total revenue, with a further £34.1 billion coming through additional tax from compliance activities.

HMRC is already a digitally-focused organisation, with a record-breaking 10.4 million people doing their income tax self-assessment forms online. This represented 94% of the self-assessment population.
