In 2017, Denmark did something no country had done before: it appointed an ambassador to the tech industry. At the time, the idea that a nation state needed diplomatic relations with Silicon Valley seemed unusual, even eccentric. Today, with frontier AI, sovereign cloud and cyber warfare at the top of the national security agenda, it looks like foresight.
The man who took that role was Casper Klynge. In episode #13 of The DigiGov Podcast, recorded live at DigiGov Expo, he sits down with host Piers Kelly for one of the most candid conversations of the series.
Casper is now Vice President and Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Zscaler. Before that, he led European Government Affairs at Microsoft and spent two decades in diplomacy and crisis management with the Danish government, the EU and NATO, including in the Balkans and Helmand. He brings a rare perspective that bridges geopolitics and technology.
Why this conversation matters now
The cyber threat landscape is changing faster than ever. New AI models can find and exploit vulnerabilities at a speed and scale we haven’t seen before. At the same time, geopolitical uncertainty is reshaping how governments think about who they buy technology from, where their data lives and how much control they really have. For public sector leaders, the question is no longer whether to act, but how quickly.
What’s covered in the episode
- From diplomacy to tech. Casper’s unlikely career path, and why he thinks the real question isn’t why Denmark appointed a tech ambassador first, but why nobody did it sooner.
- Frontier AI and the cyber arms race. Has advanced AI tipped the balance in favour of attackers? Casper gives an honest, and at times sobering, answer about a moment that shook the cybersecurity industry.
- Securing AI agents. As government rushes to deploy AI agents, how do we stop them becoming a Trojan horse? Casper offers a simple but powerful way to think about it.
- Deepfakes and trust. How can institutions stay resilient when you can no longer trust what you see and hear, and what does that mean for the next generation?
- Digital sovereignty, defined. It means different things to different people. Casper explains his framework for cutting through the buzzword, and why he believes there’s no contradiction between AI and sovereignty.
- Why walls don’t work. Drawing on lessons from the battlefield as well as the network, Casper explains why the traditional perimeter is no longer enough, and what should replace it.
- The European resilience gap. Casper raises a growing concern about how political risk is affecting security decisions across Europe.
Who should listen
This episode is essential listening for public sector CISOs, digital and technology leaders, policy makers and anyone working at the intersection of security, AI and geopolitics. Casper is direct, funny and refreshingly honest, including about the challenges facing technology companies in today’s political climate.
